FC Utrecht lost this afternoon’s match (Sunday) against Feyenoord.  In De Kuip the Domstad squad lost 2-0 against the players from Rotterdam, who ended the string of FC Utrecht victories.

The long ball was given by Sofyan Amrabat. And what was more: the ball was tailor-made. Perfectly passed on to fast Gyrano Kerk, who got to the ball quicker than Feyenoord keeper Brad Jones. To his dismay the man from Down Under saw that Kerk was still in a postion to aim at goal. He breathed a sigh of relief when Kerk’s shot hit the post. And this is why nil- nil was still on the scoreboard.

A patch of grass makes the difference
It was one of the rare opportunities for FC Utrecht in De Kuip, but more specifically a very big one. A ball that – if it had gone a few more patches of grass to the right – could have shaken up the match completely. A ball that could have given FC Utrecht the lead, and could have caused despair among Feyenoord.

Toornstra hurts his former club
But that was not about to happen in the overcrowded, windy stadium. Feyenoord were lucky before halftime, and got the job done after the break. With former FC Utrecht player Jens Toornstra of all people, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team took the lead a few minutes after the break. A loft by the international was unstoppable for FC Utrecht’s keeper David Jensen (1-0).

Elia fires with live ammunition
Ten minutes before the end, just in a phase when Feyenoord seemed to be on their last legs and mainly seemed to watch idly what the players from Utrecht were doing, the Rotterdammers doubled the margin. From the outside in Eljero Elia hit the net with a beautiful shot in the far corner and beat Jensen: 2-0.

Fourth, on their way to Roda JC Kerkrade at home
After that goal FC Utrecht still tried, but could not outwit Feyenoord’s last line. That is how trainer/coach Erik ten Hag’s team faced a defeat after a string of four victories. With still three rounds to go the Domstad team are fourth in the Eredivisie. All focus can now be given to the home match against Roda JC Kerkrade. On Sunday that match will be played in Stadium Galgenwaard.
