Head-Coach Dick Advocaat’s team beaten by Willem II 0-1 in Stadium Galgenwaard.
FC Utrecht were left without any points in the first home match of the year 2019. Head-Coach Dick Advocaat’s team was beaten by Willem II 0-1 in Stadium Galgenwaard.
The ball landed before Sean Klaiber’s feet. One more utmost attempt. One more last push. But to no avail. The ball again did not go where it should have gone if it were up to the FC Utrecht fans. Once more it was Willem II goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther who laughed last.
It simply wouldn’t work
Whatever FC Utrecht tried against the Tricolores, the outcome remained the same: it simply wouldn’t work. Balls went over, wide, cross goal, or ended up in Wellenreuther’s hands. Without any stunning football for that matter, as there wasn’t any. The match between FC Utrecht – Willem II will not be remembered as one of the best games of football of the season.
Quite a few opportunities though
So there were opportunities. Headers by Urby Emanuelsen, a huge chance for Jean-Christophe Bahebeck, scoring chances for Klaiber, Simon Gustafson and for substitute Sander van de Streek. And there was also a Timo Letschert free-kick that was difficult for the Tilburg goalie to deal with.
Crowley hits bull’s eye
Willem II had fewer opportunities, but were far more careful in dealing with the opportunities that were presented. The second half had just started, when the ball landed before Daniel Crowley’s feet. The Englishman did not think twice, but just hit the ball hard. Hard, high, an instant hit: 0-1.
From that moment on FC Utrecht started the hunt for the equaliser. Encouraged by substitutes Van de Streek, Othmane Boussaid and Nick Venema to push the ball forward, the pressure on the Tilburg goal increased. But the players from Dom City did manage to not get beyond that today.
Next stop: Zwolle
The next match in the FC Utrecht programme: PEC Zwolle away. On Sunday Advocaat’s squad will pay a visit to Jaap Stam’s team, who beat Feyenoord (3-1) and Heracles Almelo (0-2) in succession.
