FC Utrecht leave the Kuip empty-handed against Feyenoord: 1-0.
FC Utrecht’s adventure in this season’s TOTO KNVB Cup competition came to an end tonight (Thursday). Head trainer Dick Advocaat’s team lost 1-0 to Feyenoord in the Kuip: 1-0.
The fourth official held up his board, showing the number 4 in green. Utrecht had just 240 seconds to keep the dream of winning the TOTO KNVB Cup alive. Just 240 seconds to do something about that 1-0 scoreline in the Kuip, where Feyenoord had given little away in the previous 90 minutes.
Three chances in injury time
Utrecht had three good chances in the last four minutes of the cup tie. Two were for Nick Venema. In the first, the substitute couldn’t quite pull off a shot and in the second the ball fell too awkwardly for a clean header and went wide. Timo Letschert had a huge chance with a header from a corner. He propelled the ball towards the bottom corner but it didn’t get over the line. Jens Toornstra was well positioned next to the post and the former Utrecht player headed the ball away and the moment was gone.
Never quite right
Apart from some near misses, such as a handful of shots by substitute Jean-Christophe Bahebeck at the near post, Utrecht were unable to hurt Feyenoord in a cold and wet Kuip. The team tried but despite runs by Gyrano Kerk and Oussama Tannane and attempts by Sander van de Streek and Urby Emanuelson, the ball never quite fell right.
Busy evening for Jensen
Right from the kick-off, it was a lot busier at the other end of the field in goalkeeper David Jensen’s box. It was mainly thanks to Utrecht’s Danish keeper that the game remained so tense for so long. Jensen kept his team in the game with a series of beautiful reflexes and magnificent saves. He couldn’t get to the ball three times. To his great joy, the aluminium saved his blushes twice: a shot by Sam Larsson ended on the bar and substitute Luis Sinisterra headed against the post. But Tonny Vilhena got the better of the keeper. After nearly half an hour, the international headed against the Dane from close range and then beat him from the rebound: 1-0.
Three extra strikers
With the margin stuck at one goal despite Feyenoord’s many chances, Utrecht never lost hope or the prospect of a good result. Three strikers were brought on – as well as Bahebeck and Venema, Lukas Görtler also made an appearance – but the 1,200 travelling supporters were not treated to a goal, never mind a good result in the cup. Feyenoord go through to the next round; Utrecht are out.
Sunday: Ajax at home in a sold-out Galgenwaard
Utrecht have to refocus immediately and turn their attention to the next match. This Sunday, they will be hosting Ajax in a sold-out Galgenwaard Stadium. The reward is three points in the Eredivisie.
