Willem van Hanegem, new FC Utrecht coach

12 juli 2007

FC Utrecht has assigned Willem van Hanegem as the new coach. The 63 years old Van Hanegem signs a contract for two years. He is Foeke Booy`s successor, who left for Al-Nassr in Saudi-Arabia. At FC Utrecht, Van Hanegem will work in close cooperation with his assistants John van Loen and David Nascimento. Jan Willem van Dop, FC Utrecht`s president, is glad about the coming of the previous international. `As a coach, Willem van Hanegem has a lot of experience, who has proved to be able to make players better. Moreover, as a previous player and assistant-coach of the club, he is well informed about the club`s culture`.

Technical manager Piet Buter, too, is glad about Van Hanegem`s appointment. `Inside and outside the world of football, Willem is a man with an enormous charisma. With him, we have succeeded to contract someone from the `extra ordinary category`. He is a coach with an immense football understanding and a lot of football know`, Buter says.

Willem van Hanegem was born in Breskens, but he grew up in Utrecht. Between 1979 and 1981 he played for FC Utrecht. He also was assistant-coach of the club some years.  Van Hanegem started his football career at Velox in Utrecht, one of FC Utrecht`s precursors. Later on he was transterred to Xerxes DHS in Rotterdam.

In 1968 he was transferred to Feyenoord, for which club he almost played three hundred matches. With this club he scored enormous successes, like the winning of the European Cup 1 (the nowadays Champions League) and the World Cup. `Bow-legs` (his nick-name) became famous because of his personality and his tactical insight. He played 52 matches for the national team, with which he made furore during the world cup tournament in Germany in 1974.

Van Hanegem also played for AZ `67, Chicago Sting and FC Utrecht. In 1983, he ended his career as a player of Feyenoord, for which club he acted as main coach some years later. The same job he had at Al Hilal, AZ and Sparta. In his last job as a coach he was assistant to the coach of the Dutch national team (until 2004).
