Foeke Booy leaves for Saudi-Arabia

3 juli 2007

Foeke Booy leaves FC Utrecht and will get to work at Al-Nassr football club in Saudi-Arabia. FC Utrecht`s technical manager and coach signs a one year contract. Together with his commercial representative Ger Lagendijk, Foeke Booy travelled to Saudi-Arabia this weekend where he rounded off the negotiations. He also met the club`s representatives for an introduction. Last Tuesday he signed his contract. `We grant him his new challenge. It`s a logical step in his career`, FC Utrecht`s president Jan Willem van Dop said. `Foeke has meant very much for the club. To win the KNVB-cup twice and moreover the Johan Cruyff shield is an extra-ordinary achievement. He is the most successful trainer FC Utrecht ever had. We appreciate that he is looking for a new start. I know that I`m talking on behalf of all FC Utrecht staff members when I wish him a lot of success at Al-Nassr‰.

The departure of the 45 year old Booy takes place just before the start of the competition, next Saturday. `We assume that we will not have presented Booy`s successor at that moment`, Van Dop says. `We will make a deliberate choice. Of course we expected his leave since last week. In the meantime we are searching for a successor. However, we will make a well considered choice; we will not take a hasty decision. Moreover, there is no need to do so, because with John van Loen and David Nascimento we have two well qualified trainers. So they will lead the first training at the Zoudenbalch training centre. Probably they will also take care of the preparation of the first match for the Intertoto Cup`.

The contract between Booy and FC Utrecht would take another year and shortly before now, the president expected that the coach would also be in charge in the new competition. `However, we had the deal that he could leave the club when he could get an inviting challenge`, Van Dop said. `Foeke informed me about the Saudi-Arabian interest immediately. Of course we will take care of a worthy successor for Booy`.

Together with his team he won the Amstel Cup in 2003 and 2004 and in 2004 he conquered the Johan Cruyff shield. As a football player he played for Cambuur (in his native town Leeuwarden), De Graafschap, PEC Zwolle, FC Groningen and in Belgium for Club Brugge and AA Gent. FC Utrecht was the last club where he was active as a football player. In 1994, at the age of 34 years, Booy was forced to end his career after a knee injury. After that he chose for the profession as a coach. He started as the coach of FC Utrecht`s B-youth team. After that he became the coach of Young-FC Utrecht and then he became assistant to Frans Adelaar, the main coach. This is what he did for two years. Starting from the 2002/2003 competition, he was responsible for the first team. After that, he combined this job with that as the technical manager.
